The consequences of Tsar Alexander’s assassination cannot be underestimated. The great reforming Tsar, the man who had reached out to his people and freed the serfs, had been murdered. His grandson Nicholas II never forgot this. Under no circumstances would he countenance reform, he would not suffer the fate of his grandfather. He would, it transpired, be the last of the Romanovs.
