Important Canadian Inventors
The ideas and inventions that made our world a better place.
Between the wars of World War 1 and World War 2, Canada saw a numerous amount of inventions created. They made Canada a more technological nation and made these inventions not to make money but to make life easier for the average person.
Canadians made these inventions not for the fame and fortune, but to make Canada a better place to live in. Charles Best and Frederick Banting took two years of hard work and knowledge to make insulin, so that it could be used to help people with diabetes. After they knew it would help people with this illness, they sold the patent rights to insulin for $1 to the University of Toronto. They did this so that everyone with diabetes would be helped. They weren’t interested with how much fame they were going to get but how many lives they were going to save.
Ted Rogers is another Canadian that helped change the way we use radios. Before you would have to use big batteries that would run out of power quickly and before you would have to use big batteries that would run out of power quickly and you would have to wiggle the antenna to pick up the signal from the station. However, Rogers came up with the idea to use the AC current to power the radio. When he released his invention, it was amazing. He changed the course of communication in Canada and worldwide. He wanted to get a good radio for Canadians, so that they didn’t have to waste their money on the big batteries.
Joseph-Armand Bombardier made the first snow machine at 14 years of age. He didn’t know that his machine would change the winter lives of people living in the world’s coldest climate. As a young boy, he wanted to know how machines worked. This evolved into a business that is common to Canadians, Bombardier. What started into a way to make to make travelling in snow easier, turned into a huge industry that wouldn’t have been possible without Bombardier’s ideas.
Wallace Turnbull was a Canadian inventor that wanted to make airplanes fly faster and farther. He developed the variable-pitch propeller that had more than one gear. Before this, planes would only have one gear which meant that it would always be in the takeoff gear. This invention would be crucial for the Canadian and British Air force in World War 2. He didn’t publicize his invention and very few people knew of this.
Many Canadians made these inventions not to be famous but to help Canadians and others have a better life. Best and Banting saved millions of lives by creating insulin, Rogers made the radio to reduce the spending of big batteries, Bombardier invented the snow machine to travel in the snow and Turnbull created another gear for airplanes, which was critical in World War 2. All of these people did came up with these inventions for others, not for themselves.
