Indentured Servitude

The 17th and 18th Centuries’ impact on the 19th and 20th Centuries for indentured services.

With such big numbers of immigrants contracting for indentured services, there is much more to it than labor. New paper ads such as the one in the Natal Mercury that promoted indentured servants by giving positive feedback rather than the negativities of it. (Doc. 2) There are also opinions of Government officials of the indentured servitude. In the description of the labor done, British Undersecretary, Herman Merivale compares the Indentured service as a military service. (Doc. 1) Sources like these in the nineteenth century promoted people to see being a servant as a good thing. Both are opinions established by the government for free press is restricted in Britain, especially if it deals with profits. For the restricted press and opinions, certain countries like Britain rose to power for having contracted many people into different areas, colonies, and the wealth brought in by them. Britain having power and advantage of places around the world effects the global economy because they can control the world market for certain goods.

 For such small details in history can make a tremendous difference in society later on. Indentured service is a plan that European countries used to get people to move to places, work their colonies, and at the end make profit. At the end, certain countries have more wealth than others and shifting of cultures appear around the world. In a global scale, social classes are more defined and the gap between them gets larger. Creating situations where some people will live and die a certain class which is even seen in today’s society.
