June 20 a Special, Non-working Holiday
Dr. Jose P. Rizal is the Philippine’s National Hero. His date of birth is being commemorated by declaring June 20, the day after his birthday which fell on a Sunday, a special, non working holiday.
President Benigno Aquino III signed Proclamation No. 154 last April 26, 2011, Tuesday. The proclamation states that he is declaring June 20 a special, non-working holiday for Filipinos to be able to commemorate Jose P. Rizal’s Birthday.
Dr. Jose P. Rizal, whos birthday is on the 19th of June falls on a Sunday, thus the palace decided to declare it as a holiday in order for the Filipinos to commemorate and celebrate his birth, as requested by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

Dr. Jose P. Rizal is the Philippine’s national hero. He wrote books, novels and prose and poems during the Spanish Colonial Period, that awakened the Filipinos to fight for their freedom. Among his great and acclaimed works are Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo and Me Ulitimo Adios.
