Katie Couric’s Irresponsible Twitter Power

Katie Couric tweets erronious report that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has resigned to thousands worldwide.

Apparently not having the time or inclination to source her own stories now days, CBS’s $20 million news queen Katie Couric tweeted to her 140,000-plus followers Saturday that embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak had yielded to mass demonstrations across Egypt and stepped down after more than 30 years in office.

“As many of you have already heard Mubarak has resigned,” Couric posted on Twitter. One small problem, though. It wasn’t true.

While the president’s son, Gamal, had resigned from his post with the Egyptian ruling party’s senior executive committee, and other top party leaders had quit,  Hosni Mubarak stubbornly remained President of Egypt and head of the National Democratic Party.

Although Couric later tweeted “Situation is still confusing. Trying to sort it out!”, and “Lots of conflicting reports, thanks for your patience.”, an apology was not offered by her or the network.

Of course not. Why bother with a little thing like accuracy in reporting breaking world news when there are ratings at stake!
