Knitting and Crochet During The Great Depression
The history of knitting and crochet during the great depression era.
So many people knitted and crocheted during the great depression for something to do and also make cheep affordable clothing for themselves and for their children. and a lot of times people crocheted toys for their children for them to have something to play with, as there was little for recreation. So this became a great hobby that many would do to help pass the time.

Many people during the great depression actually would take whatever scrapes of yarn they had left and turn them into granny squares. These I would guess, would be eventually turned into scarves, blankets, and sweaters for the family and also to sell for a bit of extra cash to help make it through the worst of the great depression. This of course would not make you too much because not a lot of people would buy scarves and hats and other things that seemed more of a luxury than a necessity. So there is a small chance that this did much good to help relieve money problems during the great depression.
Also, the popularity of bead crochet lessened during the 1930’s, as most people just did not have the time or the money during this time era to spend making this form of decorative craft, more time and money had to be spent making items that could be more of a necessity, like scarves, hats, sweaters, blankets, socks and such. These can be made in a much quicker amount of time and actually be much more useful to a person.

There is not a lot of information, about the actual process of crocheting during the great depression era. But it would come into play, because knitting and crochet are similar in popularity and status, that if knitting became popular or anything coinciding on the process of knitting during a time era, would be the same or similar to the process of crochet.
