Korea and Conflict
Arising Conflict shows signs of de ja vu.
The recent chain of events resulting in the United States and South Korea’s decision to start performing war drills in the Yellow sea seem to show the familiar signs of another North and South Korean conflict. David Guttenfelder and Hyung- Jin Kim from the Associated Press state, “Hours after the drills began, residents of the South Korean island targeted by last week’s barrage were ordered to evacuate to shelters after the military heard fresh artillery fire north of the disputed western sea border” (2010). This tension would also involve another Chinese and United States conflict originating from the original cease fire agreement that was put into motion during the Korean War. The Associated Press states earlier Sunday, North Korea issued a fresh threat to launch attacks against South Korea if provoked; “We will launch merciless counter-military strikes against any provocative moves that infringe upon our country’s teritoritorial waters,” the North’s main Rodong Sinmun newspaper said in a commentary carried by the official Korean Central News Agency (2010). The signs of another war and at the least a long cold war conflict are becoming imminent in our near future. One thing is for certain escalation of war could easily lead to another depression in the United States depending on the outcome of the conflict. Another War is not going to boost our economy because of the fact we lack the manpower and finances to support it. In the past war has been known to pull the American economy back together by creating a strong workforce and military. This ideology has been developed from many wartime events as well as the progression through World War II which eventually led to the end of the great depression.
The United States now faces many challenges on a financial and security level. Our major dilemma we now face is that most countries are not lining up to back us up due to a world wide recession. On a good note most countries are trying to avoid conflict for the same reason to. While many countries may ultimately agree war can temporarily boost the economy and workforce they all agree the manpower to support many of these conflicts just isn’t available and even if it was the debts must be met sooner or later. While many countries try to reach peace agreements to avoid these altercations, many are still pushing for a war. The countries pushing for the wars are generally not doing as well economically as the countries trying to avoid conflict. Right now many countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, and now once again Korea have challenged the ethics of the United States. Pathetically enough these countries are disillusioned by leaders who will gladly put their people to war with little regard to the outcome. It may be more common to see many countries resort to violence rather than try to peacefully resolve these issues due to the fact their leaders have little regard for the people living there. This may be based on many issues including the worldwide economic crisis we all face right now.
The Nazism, totalitarianism, and recent dictatorships depict the ideology of struggling with a power balance to such an extent new theories have enlightened the worldwide political spectrum. The idea of a new world order has been batted around for the past decade in the hopes that a one government world operating in unison will offer the peace with no possibility of conflict. This sounds great if we were to be attacked by aliens, sort of like an independence day saga, but this is no movie saga we face. Countries like North Korea and Iran will not be happy without a decent chunk of the pie. As far as they are concerned the more the better. If this means dipping into our piece of the pie they will gladly do that. One things for certain uncle Sam may end up doing without his piece of the pie if another war prevails. It would be a great idea to build our support and join forces on a worldwide level to show these countries we do not want to be intimidated or pushed to the brink of another war. With a strong worldwide backing even a small country can get the respect they demand, especially in a worldwide economic recession. China is now telling the United States not to spend money, they would be equally foolish if they helped contribute towards another Korean Conflict.
While a peaceful alternative seems to becoming more distant and farther from our grasp right now there is still a chance for a resolve without conflict. This of course seems far more challenging then a repeat of the Korean War, but offers a more sustainable approach to battling the all to common effects of digging up all the events which led to the infamous cold war and the world wide arms race. This is a race that many countries such as Iran still cannot not wait to dip in to, which presents one of our major problems on the flipside of joining yet another international conflict. One thing is for certain we need more thinkers to promote more resolutions for the future and less doers causing more problems for the future.
