Looking at my life as a whole, my three key events or experiences that have been instrumental in shaping who I’m.

1) VISIT TO MAHATAMA GANDHI’S ASHRAM

My visit to Rashtriya Shala – Gandhi Ashram in Rajkot in the state of Gujarat, was a memorable one. Memory of my visit to meet Ms Abha Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi’s niece and my grand aunt) is etched in my mind. It was like turning the pages of the ‘SATYAGRAH  MOVEMENT’ which together with Gandhiji’s principle of non-violence gave India its independence.

Life at the Shala was a lesson in simple living and high thinking at its best. At first, we were shown the Goshala – the place where cows are nurtured.  We were then taken around the Ashram and taught the art of weaving Khadi.  It was indeed interesting to note how Gandhiji taught the Indian community to be self-reliant and strong willed. The whole place resonated a pious atmosphere amidst the sweet bhajans sung at the Ashram

Abha Ba  then narrated the two main principles on which Gandhiji lived his life – Truth and Non-violence.  The whole vision of India in the 1940’s rose before my mind and I realized how hard it must have been for Gandhiji to stand by his principles and the impact he must have had as a leader on the Indian community.

This incident carved an image on my mind. It was a kind of self-realization in the sense of knowing the truth and following the truth – Satyagrah and  always being self-reliant.

2) ACADEMICS

My academic life has inculcated in me my key personality traits. I studied in a Boarding school since age of 12 where I first learnt to be independent and self-motivated. Coming then to UK for higher studies was initially a frightening and lonely experience, being away from the secured life with family and friends at India, but my determination to succeed and accomplish my goals, lead me to secure ‘A’ levels. It  helped develop the fundamental attribute of good interaction with others as a result of which I have good leadership skills, ability to manage time and people and ability to analyse a problem logically to come to an economical solution.
