Louis XIV Persuasive
Why Louis was a good king.
How many rulers of France have ruled for 72 years and did a fantastic job the entire time? One, Louis XIV or The Sun King. Louis did an amazing job as a king all around but there is three things that he did outstandingly to make a great absolutism. One is moving the capital city as well as his court to Versailles. Two is Revoking the Edict of Nantes. Finally the third great thing that he has done was partake in four wars. Louis XIV was an upstanding ruler of France and the French people.
Louis XIV moved his court away from Pairs and into Versailles. This was an intellectually sound decision on his part. To make Louis’s power absolute he had to do this. When in Versailles Louis built a huge extravagant palace and moved all of his nobles inside of it. This huge places emphasized the power that Louis had as well as the power of France. Versailles became the absolute top in French royalty and prestige.
When Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes he really put his foot down and stated that he was in control and that no one can threaten his power. The Edict of Nantes granted Protestants the right to live in fortified towns witch the Catholic Louis did not like. Louis completely took charge and attacked this towns. The Edict also granted the Protestants religious tolerates as well as some political rights, this made the Protestants a threat to Louis and the way he ran France so by revoking the Edict he made sure that they would not stand in his way, witch lead to two hundred thousand Protestant fleeing France instead of converting to Catholicism, but out of his way none the less.
Louis XIV was a master at war. Louis raised a gigantic army of four hundred thousand well trained French soldiers, an army more powerful and larger then Europe had ever seen before. Louis hired a General, General Jean Martinet to train his army, this man was extremely effective at training the army so much so that today anyone called a Martinet means that they are a strict disciplinarian. Louis used his massive and well trained army in not one, two or three, but four wars. In order to have a good monarch and have Absolution a king must not be afraid to go to war and make and maintain a well trained army, witch Louis clearly did. These wars also added massive amounts of territory to France in several places, including along the Mediterranean Sea, Near the Alps, and along the English Channel. Louis was a brilliant war lord.
There can only be one best at something, and Louis XIV was the best that French royalty had to offer. Louis moved the French government to Versailles witch was the absolute best in French royalty. The Edict of Nantes was revoked by Louis, showing that he would not let any of his competitors stand in his way. Finally Louis partook in four wars and raised a massive army witch added much territory to France. Louis XIV was definitely the best king that the French had ever seen.
