Microcar’s Offering Amazong Gas Millage: Isetta
Isetta is the name of a compact urban vehicle designed by the Italian ISO Rivolta.
The Isetta was one of the most popular microcars produced after the Second World War, when the short-distance trips are preferred. Many people could not afford big cars and were turning to scooters or motorcycles when Isetta first came out. Although the original design is Italian, other series have been produced in Spain, Belgium, France, Brazil, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Due to its oval shape, this micro-city is known in the Anglo-Saxons as the “bubble car”, a name subsequently used for other vehicles. In Germany, it is “das Ei rollende” (literally, “rolling egg”). In France, it is colloquially called the “yoghurt pot”, because of the color white and generally used for its similarity to the jars of yogurt in glass at the time. The Isetta has become a figure of 50 years, including its forms, but also because of some people who have bought them such as Elvis Presley or Cary Grant.
The Italian Renzo Rivolta, the owner of Iso SpA Refrigerador in Milan, manufactures refrigerators in 1950. The decline in sales of its refrigerators (Isothermos) leads Renzo Rivolta to turn to scooters. However, competition from Vespa and Lambretta forces him to change his plans. It gives you carte blanche to design a Gobina vehicle totally original, capable of transporting two adults and a child, and some luggage, safely. Meanwhile, engineers Ermenegildo Preti patented in 1950, a prototype vehicle with an ovoid front wheel and 3 back wheels.
Thus in 1952 the engineers Ermenegildo Preti and Pierluigi Raggi are mandated by Rivolta, instead of Gobin, and imagine a small vehicle powered by a motorcycle engine, modern forms and practices, which incorporates the features of prototype, they will feature modern inonetions and give good stability with four wheels. Preti says she was inspired by a cargo plane in the design of the front. The name given to it is Isetta, ie small ISO. The car caused a sensation at the Turin show in 1953. Thanks to the solutions chosen solutions, the car is offered at a competitive price. It creates a lot of interest as city car.
Journalists at the time, in their tests of the Isetta, are pleasantly surprised by the sensation of space that provides the cart. A press release indicates that “the large Plexiglas windows allow an unobstructed view in all directions. There are handles to open the roof and uncover the sun. Two adults and a child can sit comfortably on the bench. However, to prevent movement in the cabin, the shifter is located on the left and the other manual controls are conveniently grouped on the steering column.
