Mistake Found in The Wizard of Oz
Mistakes in films happen all the time. I just spotted a "new" mistake in The Wizard Of Oz, can you spot it too?
So there I was watching the classic film The Wizard Of Oz and during the scene where the cowardly Lion sings the song ‘If I were King Of The Forest’ I heard something rather odd. It was a mistake of epic proportions – well, not really, it was quite a minor mistake actually, but still…
If I Were King Of The Forest
Have a listen all the way through the song and see if you can hear the mistake.
Did you hear it?
What do you mean NO?
Near the end of the song, the cowardly Lion asks the question ‘What makes the Sphinx the seventh wonder’ – to which he responds with ‘courage’ – the correct answer to what makes the Sphinx the seventh wonder is, of course, absolutely nothing, seen as the Spinx is not one of the seven wonders of the world.
The Seven Wonders Of The World, or the seven wonders of the ancient world as they are sometimes known, are:
- The Hanging Gardens Of Babylon
- The Temple Of Artemis At Ephesus
- The Statue Of Zeus At Olympia
- The Mausoleum At Halicarnassus
- The Colossus Of Rhodes
- The Pharaos Lighthouse Of Alexandria
- The Great Pyramid Of Giza
No mention of the Sphinx at all! The Great Pyramid Of Giza, the only one of the Seven Wonders which still survives to this day, may be located quite close to the Sphinx but that is neither here nor there. No matter how you look at it, by asking ‘What makes the Sphinx the Seventh Wonder?’ is a glaring mistake in The Wizard Of Oz, albeit a mistake that I had never noticed before.

Can you spot the error on your Seven Greatest Wonders of the World? Read it again. -Have you spotted it?

“The Great Pyramid Of Piza”
It is the Great Pyramid of GIZA (not PIZA)

Yes, Alistair, it is indeed a mistake, but I’m afraid you’ve made one too. The Great Pyramid is not “Of Piza”, but “of Giza”. It just goes to show that mistakes are among the things we all make.

Good spot guys – it has now been fixed. The weird thing is I just checked the copy I wrote on Word and it is there as Giza anyway. Odd!

Good to see an error perhaps Alistair but there are several lists out on the seven wonders of the world and who is to say that the Great Wall of China or the Colosseum of Rome are not to be counted ? This is not on your list but both have been on my list for many years going back to my grade school years because the Great Wall it is supposedly the only man made structure seen from space and was a tremendous undertaking. The Colosseum was also an architectural feat thousands of years ago.
So who is to say that the Sphinx could not have been on an obscure list incorporated somewhere in history? Kindly take a look at this link and you will see that the seven wonders of the world have varied over time depending on the historical period they were thought of. All the best.

The ‘difference’ – as your link attests – is that the first ones are the ‘original’ seven wonders of the ancient world, and the others have been added to a new list subsequently (perhaps in medieval times). Interestingly enough, any list of more ‘modern’ wonders – that is to say, not the original one – does not include the Sphinx at all.

there are loads of lists of seven wonders but the most accepted is that of the ancient world does not contain the Sphinx its true.

Regardless of whether the Sphinx is on any of those lists, I never really paid that much attention to what the lion was singing. Rather I was holding my ears at the lack of musical talent in the song. His fake “opera voice” fluctuations have always driven me nuts! Kudos to you for actually suffering through this song to find the oops in the first place.
