Modern Age Mammoth Eaters

It is a true, but little known story about an imperial Russian dinner in the nineteenth century.

It was during the nineteenth century, when the Imperial Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg, Russia, summoned a renowned group of European intellectuals to attend their session.  The famous discovery of a frozen Siberian mammoth had already garnished attention.  The Imperial Academy of Sciences had the mammoth delivered to St. Petersburg for a demonstration and a lecture.

The lecture on the approximately 12,000 year old frozen Siberian mammoth was given by a member of the Academy, and after its conclusion, the illustrious invitees were hosted to a fine banquet.  While drinks were being served after dinner, the President of the Imperial Academy of Sciences made the following announcement:  “Ladies and gentlemen, you have just enjoyed the oldest steak in the world!”  The astonishment was felt throughout the room, followed by a wave of ill looking faces.
