Movement Made Easy, Lifespan Shortened

Movement is one very important aspect of life which cannot be neglected by any generation. From inception man has always been on the move and as he moves he carries along those things which make life pleasurable for him, in form of goods and services. The mode of movement has continually been evolving as life itself keeps transforming from one stage to the other. From the days of moving by foot to the days of moving on horses, carts and to the modern days of using trains, cars, ships and airplane, all has helped in shaping man’s life here on earth.

The development of transport system has been of tremendous impact for humankind.  Our forefathers had to walk a long distance by foot to their destinations and in search of their daily living as such; they were only able to cover short distances. The lack of a quicker means of transporting themselves, their goods and services limited them from embarking on long distance journeys and when they do, they spend a good number of days or years to get there. This had a great effect on the society as development took a gradual and long process. The vacuum created by the challenge of moving people, goods and services from one place to another led to researches which outcome resulted in the invention of the modern means of transportation which includes car, aircraft, train and ship.  These has brought great developments to the society and the world at large, so much that one could easily travel to a far country in a matter of minutes. One major instrument that brought about these transformations in movement is Science and Technology.

Today, almost all aspect of human life is been moulded and shaped by Science and Technology. However, despite the positive impacts of Science and Technology, it still has negative consequences for humankind.  The greedy nature of man and the careless attitude with which man handles the things available to him, has brought about great damage to lives and properties. What ought to be a source of joy have dramatically turned into mourning to many homes and families.

To our forefathers, it took a longer time to get to a place and to accomplish a task, but lives were preserved and elongated. They enjoyed long life since there was nothing to cut short their lives.  Today, we all, especially those of us from the developing countries, live in fears and do not know whose turn it will be next to die in a road accident, a plane crash or ship mishap.  We are even more afraid of going out or traveling. The joy of arriving in time has been overtaken by the fear of not arriving at all. Entire families have been wiped off the surface of this earth in a twinkling of an eye, breadwinners have died without notice, fathers and mothers have left their children without saying goodbye while children have had to die without achieving their dreams. No wonder, a friend said sometime ago that the most valuable treasures are found in the grave. To worsen the situation, many have died without their loved ones identifying their bodies, they were either crushed beyond identification or they were burnt to ashes by the accompanying inferno, worst still many have been eaten up by marine animals (for those who died in ship/boat mishaps). What a painful way to die!
