Much Ado About Nothing: Simon Peres Discussed Nuclear Tech with South Africa in 70’s
Sasha Polakow-Suransky, a senior editor of CFR, and PhD candidate uncovered secret discussions between Simon Peres and apartheid South Africa that took place in the Spring of 1975.
Apparently, Simon Peres had a rocky relationship with the top leadership during the 70’s, when he was a low functioning diplomat. According to Sasha Polakow-Suransky, who uncovered some documents with Peres’ and Gen Armstrong’s (South Africa) signature, they were merely agreements to confidentiality of the discussion. Golda Meir and President Rubin apparently were unaware of these discussions and that is why the sale of the Jericho missiles, which were capable of delivering a nuclear bomb, was not completed.
However, it does appear that Israel did assist South Africa in developing its nuclear technology even up to, and including, the 80’s. According to the Wisconsin Project, it was the US that first supplied its technicians and uranium to South Africa. Well, Dr. Polakow-Suransky, good luck on your book, but the past is behind us. There’s hardly a country on the face of the planet that doesn’t have a stain on its character.
