Mythology : Lies or Truth?

Every ancient civilization in the world always leave a collection of myths. Is there some truth behind the stories, or is it just a delusion of the past?

I have a story told by my senior about how one life experience in the past can be changed into something totally different in the meaning because of the reason above. Here is the story.

There is a man, a sorrowful man. He lost his wife and daughter in a terrible accident. He wept in bitter sadness, his family tried to cheer him up with no avail. One day, the man seek a sage. He explains his circumstances and beg for the sage to give him the knowledge to revive his dead wife and daughter. In exchange of the knowledge given, the man has promise to reward the sage with all of his fortunes. The sage doesn’t have the knowledge, but after seeing his great sadness in his eyes. Sadness that will not healed by just a simple excuse. The sage said to the man “Alright, I will give you the knowledge to revive the dead. You must seek a holy fruit, it shaped like a peach. It is only grow in the garden where a family whose family members never been visited by the angel of death live. Extract the juice and pour it to a dead body, and he/she shall walk under the light once again. Eat it and one shall become immortal.”. The man was so happy, he immediately give all of his fortunes to the sage. The sage refuse it “fulfill your promise only when your wish comes true, until then I’ll be here waiting.”

The man travel to the east, north, west, and south searching for a clue that will lead him to his goal. For 20 years he travel, all the families he find always have a dead family members until one day he took a rest under a great tree. While seeing a cloud floating freely in the sky his mind processing all the experience he felt in his quest and suddenly he realized a truth, a truth he never want to see before. He comes back to the sage with haste “O great sage, thank you for your wisdom. I finally realized the truth, all living being that live under the sky will die at some point of their life. Before, I was so wrapped in my sadness that I was unable to see this truth. I feel free now, like a fog in my mind has been lifted. Thank you O great sage.” The sage smile “I am glad you have find your freedom my child. All living being are born to die. It doesn’t matter how many years you have, the important part is how you live.” After the sage said the word, he died in peace. The sage fulfill his promise to the man, and the man has found his peace. The news of the dead sage and his last teachings spread like wild fire in the summer. One person to another person, small village to big city, generation to generation. The original story has been altered “Eat heavenly peach, and you shall become immortal”.

There is generally some basis in fact in mythology. Myths are ancient civilization’s way of explaining the otherwise unexplainable.
