North Korea Ignores The Time U.s. Military Exercises and South

The annual joint trial answers to possible further provocations by Pyongyang comes at a moment of relaxation.

The South Korean president, Park Geun-Hye, today chaired a meeting of the National Security Council

Armies of South Korea and the U.S. have begun Monday annual military maneuvers traditionally condemned by the secretive North Korean regime, amid an unusual relaxation process on the peninsula. The joint military exercise, known as “Ulchi Freedom Guardian” and will last for 12 days to test the ability of the troops to ensuring security on the peninsula, according to the Joint Military Command via Yonhap .

For maneuvers, assisted by computer, will mobilize 30,000 South Korean and 50,000 U.S. soldiers.

Under the military training, which will be overseen by an international commission, contingent both are expected to rehearse maneuvers of defense against potential North Korean provocations, attacks with weapons of mass destruction and cyber attacks, said the Joint Chiefs.

Although so far the communist regime of Kim Jong-un has not sanctioned the exercise, something very unusual, analysts do not rule out that may jeopardize the progress made ‚Äč‚Äčlast week in the dialogue between the two Koreas.

In this sense, last Wednesday the two countries are still technically at war after the armistice signed with the end of the Korean conflict (1950-1953), sealed a historic agreement to reopen the Kaesong industrial park , after more than four months detained by Pyongyang’s unilateral decision .

As part of this approach, the North agreed yesterday to meet this week with the South to resume pending issues between the two countries, including the resumption of reunions of families divided by the Korean War, held in 2010.

Apart from the annual two-week trial, the South Korean government on Monday also launched an emergency exercise four days that have mobilized public and government employees across the country to prepare for possible risks, such as seizures from the North.

United States, which supported South Korea in the war between the two Koreas and agrees to defend her ally in case of aggression, maintained since about 28,500 troops in South Korean territory.
