Oral history

How do we pass on our history? Well before computers and writing was invented we passed history by speaking it

Have your grandparents took time to sit down to talk to you? Well that’s oral history! Your grandparents are passing down experience and knowledge to the next generation which is you! Oral history is the form of passing wisdom and experience to the next generation through words. Oral history is a primary source which is a source that comes from the exact person, or a first hand account or it can also be a secondary source: someone talking about someone else or a second hand account. Oral history can be true unless the person twists the truth!

There are some disadvantages to oral history and one is that it can be easily forgotten! Before we go to the next disadvantage this raises a question: Have you played telephone? You may not know it but a “original sentence” is whispered through a circle of people and usually the sentence is twisted or comes out weird! That’s similar to oral history since it can be twisted away from the truth.

But no matter what disadvantages there are, oral history is how many nations know their past! We should be grateful for our ability to speak our history!
