Paris 1800

A brief description about Paris in the 1800’s.

How did upper class Parisian women often spend their time?

They usually did not work spending a quarter of the household income on servants. They liked to go to the local opera show and sit in the box seats (the most expensive seats) to watch shows and meet with friends.

What caused an explosion in middle class population in Paris during the 180-0s?

There was a rapid increase in wealth and prosperity (success) and lower class could easily become middle class if they get an opportunity to gain money.

What skills were primarily used by the lower class Parisians during the 1800s?

They mainly had to endure manual labor such as clothes washing, in order to earn money because they have no skills.

What was visually notable about upper class women?

They usually wore jewelry, dresses and were well decorated.

How did artists depict middle class Parisian women during the 1800s?

They used impressionism, which was a new style of art in the 1900s.

What were some of the jobs lower class Parisian women held during the 19th century?

They had two paths to go down one being skilled workers and the other being unskilled manual laborer. The jobs included housekeeping, shopkeepers, babysitters and more.

Parisian women shared an invisible barrier between classes, though sometimes they were broken. The lower classes never talked to the other classes and so on. Lower class Parisian women had to either work by manual labor or become a skilled worker, this was barely enough to help them maintain a family. The middle class women were mainly lower class women who got an opportunity to gain money in the rapid increase of prosperity in the 1800s. Upper class women did not work and spent a quarter of the household income to pay housekeepers. They liked to go to the local opera and sit in the most expensive seats (the boxes) to watch shows and meet with friends. They usually are seen wearing dresses, jewelry and other decorations. That is the basic life of a 19th century Parisian woman.
