Pernell Roberts Dies

I heard on he radio late last night that actor Pernell Roberts of Bonanza died on January 24, 2010. I decided to give you a little bit of information on him.

Actor/singer Pernell Elvin Roberts , who was born May 18, 1928, in Waycross, Georgia, died January 24, 2010. He died of pancreatic cancer in his home in Malibu,  California.

In the series “Bonanza”, he played from 1959-1965, as eldest son, Adam Cartwright to Ben Cartwright. The father was played by Lorne Green. He played Chief Surgeon, Dr John MacIntyre MD. in the television show “Trapper John MD “., from 1979-1986.

In his high school years, he sang in local USO shows.

Pernell was an activist.  He participated in the Civil Rights Movement by going on the Selma to Montgomery March. He also tried to persuade NBC to hire actual minorities for minority parts instead of whites.

He attended Georgia Tech, but didn’t graduate. He went on to serve two years in the Marine Corps. He wasn’t an outstanding student, but did manage to graduate from University of Maryland.

His career began acting in Broadway and off Broadway theaters in New York City. As a young actor, Pernell, in 1965, won a Drama Desk Award for MacBeth in an off Broadway version of it. After this, he worked the Arena Stage Company in Washington D.C..

“Diagnosis Murder”, in 2001, was Pernell’s last time on television.

He was married 4 times. At his death, he was married to Eleanor Criswell.  His son Jonathan died in a motorcycle accident in 1989 at age 38.

I hope I gave you some information you didn’t know about this legendary actor.  Rest in Peace Pernell.

    I watched Bonanza on television as a kid. Back then there were a lot of cowboy shows on television. Bonanza was one of my favorites. Since I have three brothers, I identified pretty strongly with the Cartwright family. Thank you for this article.

    I heard that too and was sorry. I loved Bonanza, Little Joe was my favorite and he has been gone a long time. Hoss too, they all died young, at least Adam lived to a good age.
