Personal Account of St. John Rivers From Jane Eyre
St. John Rivers is a character in Jane Eyre. This is a fictional diary or account of his thoughts throughout the novel.
Thursday- May 12, 1850-I get up and eat breakfast. Read the Morning Chronicle. Go out to the parish and help a lady who lost her husband yesterday. I came home for lunch. Mary and Diana made lamb cutlets and tea. Went to sleep from 2 pm to 3 pm. Went outside to work on the garden when I saw a beautiful girl fainted in front of my door. Picked her up, brought her in and laid her on the bed. Mary and Diana washed her and dressed her. Day passed quietly. Had evening prayers and devotion. Retired at 11 pm.
Saturday-May 14, 1850- Got up, prayed, bathed, ate, read the paper and went out. Came back at 1 pm and found the girl to be awake. She looked much better. She drank tea, while Mary and Diana fed her and talked about her particulars. She seemed kind. Name is Jane. The name strikes a chord. Had dinner at 8 pm and retired at 10 pm.
Friday-May 25, 1850-Jane is very capable. After her recovery she did everything in the house. She knows to cook and teach. I had lunch at 12 pm. Went out to the charity school in Morton. Prayed there with the orphans and their masters. Preached from John chapter 3 verse 16. They needed a helping hand, a teacher who was kind and compassionate; Jane. Though about her possibilities to further her chances of employment as a governess. For now there was Morton. Read the Evening Post. Got Mary, Diana and Jane for an evening discussion about Jane future. She accepted. She starts the week after. Retired at 12 am.
Saturday-May 26, 1850- Got up at 6 am. Drank a glass of milk. Rushed to the parish because some woman was giving birth and wanted the blessing. I prayed for the child, a rather beautiful child. Came back and had brunch at 11 am. Got word that my visa to India was approved by the governor general. Dined at 9 pm. Retired at 1 am.
Sunday-May 26, 1850-Got up at 6 am, meditated on the scripture, had breakfast, and awoke Mary, Diana and Jane. Got dressed by 8 am. Put on my shoe but the sole and laces broke. Ran frantically around for another pair of shoes but found none. Mary, Diana and Jane tried to repair but only a cobbler could fix it. Ran out on to the street barefoot and with the grace of God found a cobbler on a Sunday! Service went well. Congregation was happy. Had lunch at 2 pm.
