Pharoahs and Other Leaders
An extensive leadership power is very blind as the Egyptian people are all to aware of.
The average reader must of heard of the ten plagues and in the time of Moses when the Pharaoh refused to let the people of the land of Goshen leave, he got his just reward. Has there been any real change since Mubarak can be as a modern version of the Pharaoh? The country has been modernized and seen changes that exemplify it across the Maghreb and beyond but there is a sense the leader is holding on much as his ancient predecessors did. Only then he was an incarnation of a deity. Why else would there have been an attempt to rip off the heads of two royal mummies at their historical museum in Cairo since the upset of the leader not wanting to go?
Change is not coming easily and it seems that no matter the number of people accumulating in their squares and streets, the power complex is still comfortable in office and it can continue to chide the Americans for their petty talk of how Egypt wants change when in fact America is only interested in maintaining its power base, investments and international prestige. Mubarak won’t leave he said that the country needs his leadership and now he says that he understands the plight of the Egyptian masses who are fed up with the same leadership for too many years without having made reforms along the way.
The leader may think of himself as a maverick and he can be seen as a war hero but if you are living in the present and want to see that the average citizen gets a pay increase and not just a government employee then you can see that his proposed measures are too little and too late. Crowds are now growing and the sentiment is still anxious to see real reform by an overall of the government processes. This cannot be met by handing the power down to a vice-president who has followed the same leadership model.
If a call for a million in the streets is not enough, then one has to go to ten million and even more for the military to see that their protection of the autocrat is futile as it is shameful. If the numbers do not mean anything then the people have every right to occupy governmental institutions since now is their moment for change and they must show that the leader understands nothing but protecting his own exit to protect exposing his billion dollar worth estate from being examined for corruption.
Too bad it took the Egyptians so long to “wake up” but all it takes for one person to set himself as a martyr in Tunisia for their to be repercussions all across the Arab world. After the chain of events one can disregard any American chanting of revolutionary change occurring in the region and concentrate on how the up-heaved states can actually keep themselves from inviting dictatorships and corrupt policies in the future. Then again corruption lies everywhere.
One may refer to the lengthy autoratic leadership as soem sort of Pharonic hegemony the country is trying to rid itself of as it can restore the dignity it deserves.
