Photos That Changed the World

A single snap shot can have a lasting affect.

Taking photographs is like taking a one second pause in some ones life. Photos can be of a joyful moment, like a birthday. Other photos can represent a very special moment in your life, marriage comes to mind, or graduation. Then there are those pictures that stick with us for a very long time, sometimes that single moment can be printed in our minds for the rest of our lives. Indeed there are some photographs that can change the world. Here are a few of those snapshots that have lasted through time.

Afghan girl

This is likely the most famous photograph that the National Geographic every put on their cover. Taken by Steve McCurry in the eighties, This 12 year old girl became one of the most recognizable faces in the world without her even knowing it. What is even more interesting is that Steve had no idea what her name was. Her identity was only discovered in 1992. Her name was discovered to be Sharbat Gula. Some twenty years after the photo was taken, Steve decided that he wanted to find her again. The only was he was to recognize the girl was with her bright green eyes. He did successfully find the girl, now a woman who is married with three children. As the picture below shows, life in Afghanistan is not one of the easiest to live.

Napalm Girl

This widely known photo of a little naked girl running down the road screaming was taken by AP photograph Nick Ut. The little girl in question is Phan Thi Kim Phuc or simply Kim Phuc. There is a sad reason for her running. Kim lived in the village of Trang Bang in South Vietnam. On June 8th 1972 a napalm bomb was dropped on the Trang Bang village. The reason why Kim is running and screaming is that napalm is burning her back. This photograph became a staple in the Vietnam war. Kim did survive. When she was in university, she was pulled out by the Vietnamese government and used as an anti-war spokesperson. Later in life she was granted permission to study in Cuba. She then passed with a perfect score the Canadian citizenship test. She now speaks in public for the International Society for Burn Injuries about her experience.

Wow, this is one of the best articles I’ve read from writers on this site in awhile. It was moving, incredible and touched me in more ways than words alone can fully describe. That first picture, I remember that so well. Her eyes are absolutely striking – powerful – unforgettable.

    Blessings.

    Sincerely,

    -Liane Schmidt.

I cannot beleive that photographer just left the child there. How could a human being to that to another, especially when there in such a fragile way. what a sick, f****d up b*****d.
Amazing pictures along with really good descriptions, aloud me to see the whole storys.
but i really cant get over how selfish that horrible, callous, disgusting man was.

I just read up on this photographer. There appears to be another story to this. Apparently a plane carrying aid had landed near by this scene and the parents had left their children momentarily to get this aid.
Although this seems unlikely to me, if this is true would a vulture really land next to the hustle and bustle of a plane carrying much needed aid.
This alternative story was also given by a photojournalist who accompanied Kevin Carter and this makes me doubt the story even more.
I stick to what I said before.. he a sick ba****d!
