Police: How They Started a Timeline in Britain

Ever wondered when the first police force was setup? Well it was in London, by Sir Robert Peel in 1829.

1829: The Metropolitan Police Force was setup in London, it was the very first modern day police, having 3200 men and faced huge opposition from the public

1835: A new law was introduced saying that towns were allowed their own police force.

1839: Another Law said the counties could setup their own police, while various crime prevention organisations in London were incorporated into the Met.

1842: The Met setup the first detective force.

1856: It became compulsory for all towns and counties to have their own police force.

1870: Police helmets, as we know them, were introduced.

1884: In around 55 years the police in Britain had expanded to around 39000.
