Preidential Vampire Hunter

A book review on Seth Grahame-Smith’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Seth Grahame-Smith does an outstanding job of bringing the world of vampires into the history of Abraham Lincoln in his latest book Abraham Lincoln:  Vampire Hunter.  Seth writes the story as if he was truly approached by a vampire named Henry.  Or was he really and you’re meant to think that this is fictitious?  He has you guessing from the Introduction to the very last page.

I’m not one to read Prologues or Introductions, but I felt compelled to do so with this book.  From then on I was captured.  Who was this mysterious Henry and how did he have Abe Lincoln’s diary?  As you progress through Lincoln’s factual life, you start wondering if this is how it really happened or is this just fiction.  His details and added pictures really make the story more believable with each turning page.  Several pages contain footnotes which helps the story, or biography, along by telling you either where the excerpt is from or what is supposed to have happened.  Graham-Smith truly keeps you pondering the entire time you are reading.

I would highly recommend this book to someone who is not very skilled in history because it literally tricks the reader into learning about the fascinating life of Abraham Lincoln.  I’m not one to read biographies on people, but this was definitely worth the exception.  Graham-Smith does not fabricate Lincoln’s true life, but merely puts a twist on it so that the reader learns while being captivated by the world of vampires.  The best part of the book is the ending.  It is by far the best ending I’ve read in a long while.  It really gets you wondering how much do we really know about the world around us.

For true historians, you may want to pass, but I’ll tell you to give it a go.  You never know.  It may surprise you.  If you have someone in the family who is not doing well in history, this maybe a way to get them interested.  For vampire lovers, this is a must read.  For everyone else, well, I’ll leave that up to you, but I will say this if you decline:  You’re missing out on one great book!
