President Barack Obama

President Barack Obama came into office at a bad time in American history. President Bush had led us into war and at his hands our economy had eroded. Our Health Care System was on the rocks and Bush was a lost cause. The American people were looking for new blood. Few hopes were held that Obama would win the election. A black man most of us had never heard of, what chance did he possibly have? But we went out and voted for him and he was elected. Let’s try to remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day or a month. I still have hopes that Obama can pull us out of the depression. We hear Obama is cold. He doesn’t relate well with people. We want a warm friendly president like Clinton but we forget how we treated Clinton when he was in the White House.

President Barack Obama

While many people greatly admire President Barack Obama, few come away from meetings with him with any feelings of warmth and friendliness. His tendency to focus on substance rather than inconsequential chatter and his refusal to play the good ole boy system makes him seem remote and cold. President Obama’s biography gives an idea of how his independent personality evolved. In Chicago where he grew up he learned to place people in relation to the city’s big political machines. Opposing it were the reformed liberals and his parents and their friends who changed it. The odd thing was that Obama passed through the upheaval seemingly detached from the whole business. This sense of detachment has remained with every institution Obama has been associated with. The only place he has described with a feeling of attachment is the Trinity Church In Chicago.

As Obama describes in “Dreams From My Father” even this sense of belonging was tinged with ambivalence: “Part of me continued to feel that this Sunday communion somehow simplified our condition, that it could sometimes disguise or suppress the very real conflicts among us.” Obama in telling the story of his absent father explains how in discovering who he was, he grew from anger and cynicism to a deep social commitment. He began to see past personalities to problems that lay below the surface and felt the need to do something about them.

Obamas lack of deep attachments to personalities in his life may have more to do with his relationship with his mother than his father. His mother sent him to live with his grandparents in Hawaii when he was 10 years old. After her second marriage failed she too, returned to Hawaii. A few years later when she returned to Indonesia, her teenage son remained with his grandparents. The absence of his mother left Barack independent to an unusual degree and free to form his individual theories and opinions.

President Clinton even standing backwards with his eyes closed related well with people. Clinton bonded with people through common experiences and interests, connecting emotionally was part of the package. As a result people tended to either love or hate him. There wasn’t much middle ground. President Obama’s demeanor places him in the company of President Lincoln. His relationship with others is analytical rather than emotional. This tendency can make him seem remote and as a result some people don’t feel any great warmth toward him. Rationalism and level-headed in a crisis, and dispassionate decision making can read as coldness and aloofness to the fringes. But on the positive side it’s a healthy personality that can forge ahead and doesn’t need the admiration or approval of the crowd for validation.

Great post. Now is not a good time where people put all the blame and find fault with the president.

This is a great article. I just got this book about Barack so it is so weird that you mentioned it in your article. I am more than willing to give him a chance to turn this country around. He had big shoes to fill when he got in office so everything was not going to be done right away.

Ruby Hawk, I admire your thoughtful article on Obama. I never knew who his grandfather was on mother’s side… I have to admit that I’m a bit surprised by your passionate wisdom take on people, after all your lifetime experiences.

I had picked up a source about a photo guy raising up in high school in Hawaii with Obama, though I was a bit confused by my youth phenotype of cousins. I suppose he and I are somewhat analytical in the same way at wrong time!

Hmm, could it be that Obama’s mother was born sometimes after 1953? *looking back at twisted family history of photos*

    Good article.
Personally, I feel Barack Obama is one of the greatest Presidents America has ever had. He is responsible and rational – and he knows where to focus his effort and attention.

People in America and elsewhere are understandably upset that things are taking ‘too’ long to happen, like getting jobs, getting cheaper healthcare and the return of our boys in Iraq. What people are overlooking is that he is working on all of that – and he does have a full plate too – but things take much more time to fix then to destroy.

I just sincerely hope Dems win Nov 2010 and Nov 2012 and I am very sure that America will recover by mid decade if this happens.

You have made us look at Barack Obama as a human being. Very well written. We will always have complaints about our leaders. But I’m unhappy with so many of his policies. I have a son but if I had a daughter at 17 Barack decides that she can get the morning after pill without my consent. As a parent he has bulldozed my rights. Never mind that I don’t believe in abortion. I want my daughter to come and speak with me first. I found that policy very threatening. He has daughters so I don’t get it. Even if a parent believes in abortion I’m sure they would like to know what is going on with their children.
Anyway the poor man has a very tough Job and I feel for him and any leader. His aloofness I’m sure does not mean he is cold.
Clinton was a lot of fun and did appear more human I quess what matters most is how and if they get the job done.
I do like this article. Thank you.

I do agree with you that President Obama came at a bad time in American History. Recently, an older man approached me at the gym and started talking to me about Obama and the whole economic crisis. A lot of the points you mention here, I remember him discussing with me. I have a lot of faith in Obama and I do hope that he does something to resolve our current crisis. As far as the rumors about Obama being cold and dispassionate, I don’t agree because he does come across as a very charismatic person. This is a very good article.

Agree with you that President Barack Obama came into office at a bad time in American history. People all over the world have a great expectation on him. Hope his characters can help him to cope with the stress and do the most beneficial things.

Sorry Ruby, please do not be offended. You have had the wool pulled over your eyes. Be afraid, very afraid, this man is not what you portray him to be! May God’ blessings be on America until this presidents term is up!!!!!!!

Gr8 article about Barack Obama. For me, he is one of the greatest Presidents in the world who is trying to do some good for the people of his nation. These days, politicians seldom think of people who voted for them.

Nice article. Obama is great but I think power may just enter his head to spoil the party. And who thinks Obama doesn’t relate well with people.

His personality must have been similar to our former President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. She did not give a damn about rapport and popularity claiming she only had to do what was right for our country and what was right for the country was burying it deeper into the evils of corruption. Hope it works differently for your country.

The president is doing the best he can with what he has. All presidents have to deal with polices left over from former presidents and change is always harsh. He will go down in history as will Hillery Clinton and there is nothing anybody can do about that but except it.

I respect President Obama and believe he is doing everything in his power to get out country back on it’s feet. As you say Rome wasn’t built in a day and jobs are not coming back in a day and neither will our armed forces be home in a day. Sad but true.

I love ya Ruby, but just dont agree with you here. President Obama did come into his presidency at a bad time, but so have others. FDR, for example. The measure of a man’s greatness is not what he does in the ideal situation, but rather what he does in the difficult ones. I agree with little he has done thus far.

You have presented an excellent article but I also don’t think he is what he states he is. I am very afraid for our country under his so called leadership.
