Presidents Day: Open or Closed?

This article will explain what is open or closed, as well as explaining thew history meaning, and some twists that stand today.

Presidents Day is a holiday that is slipping into obscurity. Once a holiday that affected businesses, now is a day famous for car dealerships offering sales. But with any holiday comes questions; are banks, schools and the U.S Post office open?

Mail: Since President’s Day is a federal holiday, all U.S. Post Offices are closed. But now most delivery services continue to run today.

Banks: Some will only be open for limited hours, but most are closed. In store banks may be open, but most banks will only allow access to online banking.

Schools: The vast majority of public schools are closed, but very few private schools may be open. Colleges and universities have increased classes on this day.

Business: Most business are open, as sales are rampant on this day. Today is your day to shop if you are looking for a car, as dealers will mark down their prices.

Government Offices; Most are closed, but check with your local ones to make sure.

 

Presidents Day and Washington’s Birthday can be used interchangeably. While the original intent of this holiday was to celebrate our first president’s birthday, a movement in 1951 ultimately changed the holiday to honor the office of the presidency. It is celebrated on the third Monday in February.

Massachusetts: While they celebrate Washington’s Birthday, they use Presidents Day to honor Oval office leaders from their home state. John Adams and John F. Kennedy are two of the most recognizable names.

Alabama: Recognizes Presidents Day as Washington and Jefferson’s birthday even through Thomas Jefferson was born in April.

Virginia: In Washington’s home state, it is known as George Washington Day legally.

Since 1862, is has been a tradition to read Washington’s farewell address in the Senate in lieu of the approaching Civil War.

Presidents Day is a holiday that has changed though history, but still has an underlying meaning, respect the office of the presidency and commemorate all those who took the charge to change and lead our country.
