During the war years of the Second World War, both blacks and women gained much politically, socially, and economically. However, it is clear blacks made much more gains then the women did during these war years.

More than one million blacks were able to serve in the armed forces, and the officer schools they went to were often desegregated (World War II at Home 3). Blacks were now able to obtain higher positioned jobs as officers, and this was social gain. Furthermore, black leaders were able to effectively create campaigns such as the Double V campaign. Additionally, during wartime black “membership in the NAACP grew from 50 to 450 thousand” (3). Furthermore, there was much more resistance against Jim Crow laws, such as the creating of CORE in 1942. Blacks were improving politically during the war time because they were able to run effective campaigns and have more power in unions. The violence and racial tensions during the Second World War period were not at WWI levels, showing the social situation for many blacks improved.
