Reasons for the United States Entering WWI

First, Germany and the other oppositions all were not democracies but other forms of government such as dictatorships.  The US naturally wanted democracy to prevail throughout the world because that was what their form of government was.  Next, the US had very strong ties to Great Britain since they used to be Great Britain’s colonies.  They both spoke a common language, had common ancestors, and business and trading deals between them.  In addition, the US besides having many trading deals with the Allies had loaned much money to the Allies that they would not receive back unless the Allies won the war.  Also, the Germans started a policy called the unrestricted submarine policy.  This was a policy in which any ship in German waters would be sunk whether it was neutral or not.  A famous neutral submarine sinking was the Lustania.  The sink of the Lustania killed 1,198 people including 128 Americans.  The Zimmerman telegram was a telegram intercepted by Great Britain sent to Mexico that said if Mexico declared war on the US that Germany would give them back the land that they had lost in the United States.  This was the final straw; the US was provoked into war because of a combination of all these causes.

Through all these reasons I think the United States had more than a sufficient cause to enter World War I.  The United Sates was very deliberately and steadfast on their decision to not enter WWI until they were heavily provoked and threatened.  Germany even wanted the US to join the war, just not on the allied side.  The United States joined World War I after much deliberation, but they joined for a very strong cause.
