Reign of Power

An analysis of Hitler and his aims of creating the perfect society.

Seeing that Stalingrad was unwilling to surrender, Hitler looked to Moscow, the heart and capital of the Soviet Union. A Nazi attack on the capital began on October 1941. The Germans had advanced to the outskirts of Moscow by December. The Soviet General Georgi Zhukov counterattacked. He had the harsh Soviet winter and 100 Siberian divisions on his side. As temperatures decreased, the Germans retreated. Their fuel oil froze and tanks, trucks, and weapons became useless. Hitler told his generals “No retreat!” since he was unwilling to lose the war. German troops dug in about 125 miles to the west of Moscow. They were able hold the Soviets until March 1943. However, Moscow had been saved and had cost the Germans 500,000 lives.

The Germans unconditionally surrendered World War II on May 7, 1945. Their surrender was officially signed on May 8. Due to their loss, the Germans had to face many consequences. It had to go through a de-Nazification program. Germany was divided into two separate sides, East and West Germany. The war had cost the Germans 212.3 billion dollars. About 3, 300, 000 soldiers were either killed or missing. In addition, around 2,893,000 civilians died in total. It was a time of great struggle for the Germans. Hitler is viewed as one of the cruelest people in the world. However, his powerful speeches gained him a lot of support before and during his rule. Adolf was believed to be the man that would lead Germany to fame and glory. In, the end, his empire crumbled and he was left with nothing.
