Relevance of Gandhi Today

Armchair thoughts.

Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi, a rare phenomenon, in human existence and in Indian politics as well as his impact on the world politics. He appeared like the Lord, give the freedom, which has been eluding India for over a century. What are the qualities that made Gandhi succeeds so incredible? What was his success mantra? India consists of diverse people with vast sub sects and with many facets of belief and faiths. Mahatma Gandhi had vast vision, clarity of vision, tenacity of purpose, courage of conviction, disregard for personal comfort, a sense of humor, humility and respect for humanity. He is known for his personal sacrifices and wants others to do the same for him and for the world. These anecdotes of Mahatma Gandhi have acquired the force and flavor of parables. When Gandhi came to Indian scenario, there are lots of visual thinkers but no uniformity or single stream of motion of thoughts prevailing among them. There are extremist who believe force is might and there are others who believe in peaceful means and dialogue. Mahatma Gandhi is the moderator between these two.

These are all in the golden pages of history but why this article. It is quite apparent that similar situations and the crisis of thoughts exist among the counties all over the world in the current scenario. Terrorism was rampant in previous decades and in this decade the trend seems to be at the mob violence. Secularism is fast becoming a withdrawing defense. Everywhere there are strident and aggressive voices and the means are fast becoming the endless ifs. Religious fundamentalism is converting into hornet’s nest through out the world. The level of intolerance and the height of ignorance is moving towards a cancerous limb. Everywhere we have been experiencing the lack of integrity, inconsistency, incompetence of political will, interference of government machinery. Still the author is searching for the modern day Mahatma, where he is, he has to reach here to moderate this acrimony.  Large scale of industrialization, automation, urbanization, the materialism and the loss of faith on everything is on the rise. It is on acceleration and vastly downgrading the gradual landslide of world’s ideals.

Agrarianism and peaceful coexistence in a fraternity of like-minded people are unthinkable goals under present circumstances. It is high time for most of the people of the planet to concentrate and reflect upon the principle of simple living and high thinking, the principles propagated by Mahatma Gandhi decades back. Self –reliance and the non-violence should be the ideal for the mankind to preserve this planet from this volatility for future generations. We are living in a planet, till to date  is unique in this whole universe having living beings being lived here. May be the earth is unique in this sense and it is the duty of ours to preserve this live planet from becoming fast Wasteland, T.S. Eliot rightly pointed out.

Gandhi’s ideals are even more relevant today than in the past. He was a visionary. His ideas of satyagraha, globalization vs self sufficiency has withstood the test of time.

Mahatma Gandhi was by far the greatest person of the twentieth century, and I suspect for many centuries before that. A great spiritual leader as well as a political one. I was just a boy when he died back in 1948 but I remember well, my father talking about it. Since than I’ve read everything I could get my hands on about him, and I also have the movie, that was made about his life. I like your article very much and we agree on many things. Thank you for sharing this. Blessings.

Excellent article on a very great and wise man. Very well written.
Gandhi was indeed a man of deep thought, wisdom and conviction.
An interesting observation well worth considering: Mahatma Gandhi, an Hindu, once told the British viceroy of India that if both of their countries came together based on the teachings of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount they would have solved, not only the problems of their two countries, but the problems of the world. Now wouldn’t that be wonderful if we only would! Two thumbs up on this fabulous article. Great job.

He is and he will remain in history as a very important political figure. As far as I know, his spiritual guidance and leadership qualities changed the course of India for the future.
