Republican and Federalist Impressions on The French Revolution
by The Republicans and the Federalist had many significantly different views which could be linked to the continual battle between liberty and order.
Republicans and Federalist had many different views, particularly the French Revolution. Republicans thought that the French Revolution could “undermine civil order as it had been understood for generations in America.” This means that it could bring up rebellions and cause people to break rules that were set in place to maintain a proper country. On the other hand, the Federalist embraced the fact that the French had gotten rid of their monarchy and wanted to govern themselves. The Federalist were arguing that the revolution had given the French new liberties yet the Republicans strongly believed order was a problem because of the radicals. There have been debates for a long period of time on order and liberty because they were very important in a government. They needed to find a way to give them freedom yet control them. But, if they control them too much, it would take away from their freedom.
