Sarah Baartman

There is a woman named Sarah Baartman who lived in the 1800s who was famous for the same bodily asset that made Kim Kardashian, Serena Williams, and Jennifer Lopez cultural icons.

When you here the name Kim Kardashian, Serena Williams, or Jennifer Lopez, what is the first impression in your mind? Buttocks. For some reason, a huge buttocks pervaded the cultures of the world in the entertainment industry today. But there was a woman in the 1800s who was famous in Europe for possessing the same bodily asset, and made became famous for doing so. Her name was Sarah Baartman.

At the age of 21, Sarah Baartman was a young black girl from the southern part of Africa. In 1810, A British man convinced her to come with him to England. Sarah chose to go. It was a free will choice she made. Since then, Sarah performed on stage in front of European men in both England and France, showing her huge bare buttocks.

For the next 5 years, Sarah displayed her huge buttocks for the enjoyment of British and French men, who had the privilege of touching it to their heart’s content! Sarah learned to tolerate this and just stood there experiencing each squeeze of European mens hands! At age 26, in 1815, Sarah succumbed to illness from either smallpox or syphilis in France.

French doctors in 1815 were so fascinated by Sarah’s huge buttocks that after she died, doctors preserved her buttocks in formaldehyde for display to the medical community and the general public!

Her legacy was the perpetuation of the huge female arse, which subconsciously spread to all other industrialized countries in the world, especially the United States.

Since 1996, when Jennifer Lopez first appeared as a superstar, it seemed that the Saraj Baartman phenomenon resurfaced again. Kim Kardashian and Serena Williams perpetuate this huge arse image today, passing the torch that Sarah Baartman first lit in 1805 in Europe.

What Kim Kardashian, Serena Williams, and Jennifer Lopez have is no more than what many women of color are blessed with. Where as Sarah Baartman was the product of a genetic “defect”, if you will, called steatopygia, common among the Bushmen of Africa.
