Scary Nightmares: The Past Wars

by CHAN LEE PENG in History, January 15, 2008

War is another form of killing that has taken away many lives. Let’s all aim for peace.

War is a way people strive and struggle for glory and victory, and sometimes even for fame. Back in the primitive society, war is a kind of mental and physical conquers to eliminate the weakest tribes while rising up the power of the strongest tribes. This is the way how people at that moment survived for competition. Objectively, some people may think that war has promoted human evolution, nevertheless, this statement leaves many pro and con of the war.

In the society with obvious class stratification, the nature and concept of the war has changed. The war is regarded as a form to compete for territory, to expand sovereignty, and to suppress the people. On the battlefield, a large number of young workers were killed and seriously injured. At the same time, millions of families have lost their beloved children, spouses or any closely related bonds as the war has thrown human’s life into endless and terrible disaster.

When Western Europe entered the phase of capitalist society, they have used the power of advance science and technology to promote war. The greediness of the capitalists had led their attempts to uphold the malignant capitalism ideology within the society. The capitalists utilized the tanks and bombs to colonize Asia in order to seize for cheap raw materials and commodities. With their powerful weapons, they conquered the lands of Africa and America by killing and slavering red Indians, indigenous and black people.

In the early of 20th century, capitalists utilized their power of colonialism to aggressively rob more lands in order to meet their desires to expand the border of their territories by adopting the ideology of imperialism. The contradiction among the colonialists became intensified as they competed to conquer more lands. In 1914, Germany, Austria, Italy were allied with Britain, France and Russia to initiate the First World War. In the same year on August 23, Japan declared the war on Germany. In January 1917, the United States participated in the war. In 1918, 33 countries from the world’s three large continents initiated the unprecedented human World War II.

The World War II lasted for 4 years and 3 months, and involved more than three quarter of the world’s population or 15 million people at that time. More than 8,000 million of people were sent to the battlefield, and more than 30 million people have become victims in this war. Approximately 10 million of them died of hunger and bombs attack. Countries that involved in this war suffered total economic losses of about 270 billion US dollars.

During the First World War, colonists have brought along with their scientifically designed tanks and any other weapons that could take away lives to the battlefield. Chlorine was first used by the German in the war. Later, they developed the more advance chlorine-weapons with killing power as high as 10 times than that the previous version. Not soon after that, British and French created their own poisonous bombs. These bombs were furnished with higher toxicity substances which can lead to the decaying of human skins. In this one-year long tragic war, the soldiers were the victims, and more than one million of them died of poisonous.

No winner or loser in the war. The capitalists who upheld the war were the chief culprit that killed many innocent lives. The battlefield was actually a boxing competition between the colonists who wished to certify their positions as “BIG BROTHER.” Therefore, a series of wars were proceeded to achieve this purpose. In fact, the capitalist system did not collapse as claimed by someone, but they continued the war on behalf of their personal gains. As a result, the battlefield was actually the imperial field to extend the colonialism. The battlefield was engulfed with smelly blood with lots of human bodies piling up just because of these people who proposed this ridiculous war.

The Second World War took place shortly after the First World War. The imperialists who suffered from economic crisis in the First World War tried to push the catastrophe of the war to other countries.

From 1931, the incidence of “September 18” until the incidence of “July 7” in 1937, Japanese imperialists had attacked aggressively against China. In September 1939, Germany invaded Poland, initiating the outbreak of World War II. The war proceeded until September 1945 with the surrender of Japanese imperialists. This six-year long war finally ended the World War II. This war involved more than 20 million people from more than 60 regions in the world. This terrified war, undoubtedly, has taken away 50 million human lives, which killed 20 million people in the Soviet Union and 18 million people in China. The total economic loss for this war was estimated for 1.154 trillion US dollars.

During World War II, the outstanding achievement of science and technology was first misused to manufacture weapons that killed people. People who proposed Fascism achieved their war purposes with their inhuman ways of using bacteriological and chemical weapons to kill more lives.

In the late World War II, Germany successfully developed their own missile, while the United States has succeeded in the development of atomic bombs. These two different technologies had changed the form of the war, and ultimately changed the fate of mankind.

Chemical weapons are byproducts of modern application of science and technology but they cause great sufferings and afflictions to the victims at the battlefield who struggled terribly before their last breath. Therefore, chemical weapons have been described as the most uncivilized and atrocious way human uses to kill human.

In the First World War, as much as 110,000 tons of chemical weapons were used to kill one million people. After the end of the war in June 1925, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and other 38 countries met at Geneva Conventions to compromise with the agreement of “…on the banned poisonous gas or similar operations, and of Bacteriological Methods of the Protocol.” This is a historical event that prohibited the world to use the chemical and biological weapons. More than 30 countries were signed for this agreement in search for peace.

The chemical and biological weapons did not end up with the treaty of Geneva Protocol. The Japanese invaders had used chemical weapons widespread during World War II to extend their imperialism. In fact, before signing for Geneva Convention in 1928, the Japanese had built the chemical weapons factory on the island of Kuno Hiroshi.

Before the surrender of Japanese Imperialists, they had produced 7,357 tons of cyanide diphenyl arsenic, Louis’s gas, benzene chloride ethyl ketone, phosgene, hydrogen cyanide and other toxins, and 700 million extinguishers, bombs, and weapons filled with deadly and poisonous shells. Japan fought aggressively towards China by dispatching two of their powerful regiments’ troops of military forces. In May 1939, the Japanese military forces issued a use of “yellow agent (refers to Louis’s gas, lethal agents and other chemical weapons) to launch a criminal chemical warfare against China. Japanese troops used substantial amount of chemical weapons as many as 2000 times to repeatedly attacking 19 provinces of China, resulting in the killing of more than 90,000 people.

Bacteriological weapons are equally notorious criminals as chemical weapons. Among the Japanese troops that were ordered to attack China consisting of 731 troops whose jobs was researched on biological weapons. They had tested the bacteriological germs on anti-Japanese patriots and innocent civilians. Approximately 3000 people had become innocent victims for this bacteria test. In 1940, they used aircraft to spread germs of cholera, anthrax and typhoid particularly in Zhejiang and Shandong, which successfully caused the death of 10,000 people in China.

During World War II, Germany developed the ballistic missiles, which became enormous threat to the allied countries. And till now, missile has played the main role in the war. In the late World War II, another high-tech weapon, nuclear weapons were successfully designed for the use of the war. Again, nuclear weapons have changed the form of the war as well as the fate of mankind. These nuclear bombs were created by the late World War II, mainly because of the maturity of scientific theories on atomic bombs in the early of 20th century.

Early in the 19th century, the electric ions was found and later scientists discovered uranium, plutonium and other elements that could release ray, enabling the manufacture of photographic film camera. Shortly after that, Rutherford established radiotherapy theory by proposing the model of nuclear structure. Finally, the secret of atomic was revealed by a 26-year-old Einstein, who created the special theory of relativity, known as mass-energy relation. Its formula is E = mc2 (E = energy, m = mass, c = speed of light, 3.0 x 108m / sec.). This theory says a minimal loss of mass can release tremendous amounts of energy. In other words, the loss of 1g mass can release the energy of 9 x 1013 joules. This theory further confirms the existing of nuclear energy.

In 1932, the British physicist, James Dadewei, discovered neutron. Neutron composes of core particles of the atomic nucleus, carries no charges and the best nuclei bombardment. In December 1938, German physicist, Otto Hahn and his fellow friend, Strauss discovered that nuclear released tremendous amounts of energy during uranium fission, 2 to 3 times neutrons were released during their experiments in the laboratory. This situation explains the possibility of nuclear fission chain reaction.

In 1939, the Danish physicist, N Boer and his collaborator, Wheeler expounded the theory of nuclear fission reaction to be caused by the response of the nuclear mass of uranium-235. At this point, the atomic bomb is very fragile to touch as it might have exploded anytime due to the theory of nuclear fission reaction.

In 1939 alone, Einstein wrote to President Roosevelt in order to be the first to create atomic bombs before the fascists. In his letter, Einstein explained to the president the theory of the atomic bomb and the necessity of its application in the war strategy. After some considerations, the president approved the implementation of “Manhattan Project” of the atomic bomb development program. The specific technical issues on atomic bomb were headed by the research of Oppenheimer. This project was completed in three years, with the cost of two billion US dollars accompanying with 500,000 staffs. Finally, on July 16, 1945, the United States launched the explosion of its first atomic bomb.

An Explosion of a Nuclear Bomb

A bomb is a flash of light that furnishes an area within 400km across the sky, followed by a huge mushroom like explosion shoot up 800m deep into the sky. It shakes the earth, trembles the sky, and shudders the fate of humanity as a whole. This flash of light is like the opening of the Pandora’s Box that releases a dark evil spirit to the world.

Shortly thereafter, on August 6, 1945, a bomb weighing 5 tons (called little boy) was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan killed more than 88,000 people, 51,000 people either injured or missing. 22,000 out of 48,000 buildings collapsed and destroyed in this bombing incident. On August 9, 1945, the United States dropped second atomic bombs over the city of Nagasaki, Japan. 273,000 people died and 60,000 people were reported missing on this second bombing event.

A sign at JR Hiroshima station clearly explained the city in Hiroshima after the explosion of atomic bomb or in Japanese reads “genbaku.”

Shall the United States drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? People seem to have different perceptions on this issue. Some people think that the use of nuclear weapons is a violation of human civilization and is regarded as inhuman and atrocious. Einstein who wrote letter to propose president for the creation of atomic bomb, and other scientists involved in this project later felt deeply guilty on the bombings in Japan, particularly for the innocent victims that were killed in this war.

On the other hand, some people agreed to the action taken by the United States as they explained that this is the best way to accelerate the surrender of Japan’s fascism from spreading their imperialism to other countries.

Burnt skin in the dark portions were results from the atomic explosion, 1945

Undeniably, the atomic bombs dropped in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki took away 100,000 innocent lives. The hospital personnel who came to rescue the victims had to experience the injury caused by nuclear radiation. Its radiation effect on human carried as long as 20 years.

The sad thing is the tragedy of atomic bomb did not end here. Shortly thereafter the bombing in Japan, the Soviet Union exploded its own atomic bomb.

After World War II, the development of missile technology had added the wings of atomic bomb to bloom till now. This is like the opening of a Pandora’s Box of magic with the dark shadow encompasses the entire world.

Up to now, war never ends and it has used as the measure to achieve the purpose of economy, politic and social status. The war is another form of massive killing, slaughter and massacre. War is also considered as homicide that touches the peaceful life of the world.

Human is regarded as the highest civilization and intelligent animal, and thus individual or terrorist who propose war is like a beast. I am wandering why war is chosen to solve the problem. Shall we just sit face to face and get the problem solved in peace? Why people can’t go in peace instead of war???

Stop The War, Please!

No winner and no loser. True. Sadly, the struggle for land, power, and prestige in one form or another will always be part of existence for as long as there is civilization. Doesn’t seem so civilized when we see the end results, does it?

    Great article, Chan.

I agree with you Chan, and Darlene. Even children have disagreements, and settle them, going back to play peacefully. Adults could learn from them. Very passionate plea, and good research Chan. You were quite eloquent.
