Secrets of Gupčeva lipa
In Gornja Stubica, place in Hrvatsko zagorje, situated on the north side of mountain Medvednica, very significant historical event, peasants revolt, took place. It was general revolt of peasants from Croatia and Slovenia against feudalism.
In 1573. peasants in Hrvatsko zagorje lived very hard, under the tyrany of nobles
As a beginning of the protest they refused to pay taxes, but when one of the nobles , Franjo Tahi, sent his army against them and parliament declared them traitors of their homeland because of their resistance to his arm, they responded with general revolt against the feudalism.
Matija Gubec from Gornja Stubica was elected leader of the revolt.
Their goal was abolition of the inequitable regime of feudal government and formation of peasants government.
The revolt took place at the end of January 1573. in 60 manors on the territories of Croatia and Slovenia, and it failed on February 9′th 1573.when the last remain part of peasants army, in Hrvatsko zagorje, near Stubičke Toplice was attacked and defeated by feudal army under the command of Gašpar Alapić.
After the battle Matija Gubec was captured and taken to Zagreb were he was cruely executed on February 14′th. Legend says he had to carry incandescent crown on his head.
Today, near local church in Gornja Stubica still stands Gupčeva lipa as witness of this historical event.
According to legend Matija Gubec and his collaborators made plans of the revolt and kept long conversations under this tree so it hides many secrets.
By it’s age, dimensions, and specific appearance it represents a natural rarity.
It is also very significant as historical monument, so in 1957. it was declared natural monument and is under state protection.
