South Carolina`s History
These are a few paragraph of South Carolina`s History.
The history begins with the Native Americans who arrived about ten thousand years ago. When they arrived they only ate nuts, berries, roots, and animals which were hunted. Only about three thousand years ago they started planting crops like squash, beans, pumpkins, and corn. Many of the women made clay pots. They also learned to make cloth from animal skin. Most coastal Indians made diapers out of moss and also would use turtle shells for bowls. Soon they found that a layer in willow bark could be used as a pain killer. It seemed that Native Americans had made lacrosse by using deer skin balls, wooden sticks, and wood goal post. Later Spanish came to America. They invited the Indians aboard there ships where they made them slaves.
England claimed North America in the early 1600s. In 1629 king Charles gave a large chunk of land to Robert health. The land was named Carolina or land of Charles. The first ship arrived in 1670.The first Colony of England was Charleston. There they grew rice and corn. Rice was their most earning cash crop. Conditions were harsh, hot and very humid. In 1712 Carolina split in two creating two separate states. Later a war broke out against yamasee tribe. Lastly the colonist had to deal with Black Beard which is a notorious pirate who stole thousands of dollars.
Towards 1763 the war for Ohio ended. Later the British began taxing for the war which had happened it began with the sugar act. In 1765 British passed two more acts. The Quartering act and stamp act. All these acts were meant to pay for the war, colonists were not happy for they had no voice in this decision. In 1767 they made the town shed act. By 1768 a year later there was almost nothing you couldn’t be taxed on. The revolution soon happened. South Carolina was one of richest states in the colonies. The battles of the cow pens were soon won. Lastly the treaty of Paris was signed the Americans had one.
In 1787 the constitution was drawn. In following years the cotton belt was made. It was used to extract seeds from cotton quicker than hand. In 1820 unhappiness flew over the police that were not helpful to the economy increase. Many people oppose the tariffs or taxes on import. Soon they made a cancellation of the tariffs. Later the Carolinian became very uneasy for the north had almost completely abolished slavery. Abraham Lincoln outlawed slavery, thus, starting the civil war. Fifteen thousand confederates were killed in battle. Later the north blocked the harbors stopping all imports for the war including medicine. Lastly the first submarine was used. Sadly the crew was never found.
The civil war was very hard for Carolinian the state got a new constitution which abolished slavery, and provide equal rights for Africans. Also it let Africans have school rights. Soon so called carpet baggers arrived from north to join the so called “scallywags”. Member of the Ku Klux clan often wore white robes with hoods they often black mailed and also murdered. In 1890 “pitchfork bob” was elected Governor. Then the Jim Crow laws began. That forty thousand men, women, and even children were working in the cotton mill! Lastly In 1910 to 1929 African Americans immigrated north. This was called the great immigration.
In world War one economy grew largely in South Carolina. They were supplying almost every thing from bandages to suits and patches. Soon health insurance was better. Greatly child labor was finally abolished, but the greatness was short. 1920’s brought the plague of the Boll Weevil a Bug which quickly demolished crops. Later the depression happened. Jobs were almost impossible to get.
World War Two brought many important changes to South Carolina. The Depression was over. By 1960 Africans had full rights and in 1970 three Africans were elected to the legislature. Today Tobacco, soybeans, and cotton remained cash crops in South Carolina. Many farmers began city life soon people flooded to South Carolina. South Carolina actually broke the national average in 1990. In the beginning of the twenty first century the Hunley from the civil war was found. Lastly and final it is on display in a museum.
