The Age of Discovery
Discovery.
In the lates 1400s, a new age of learning began in northen Italy. People studied the books of ancient Greece and Rome. Tey wrote poetry and painted wonderful pictures. Europeans thought up many clever new inventions, such as printing presses, pocket watches, thermometers, and telescopes. At the same time, sailors from Portugal and Spain were traveling to distant lands in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. They were looking for precious spices and gold, and for new lands to conquer. These European explorers often killed the local people or forced them to become slaves.
Christopher Columbus- was an Italian explorer who worked for the Spanish king and queen. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, reaching the island of the Caribbean Sea.
Martin Luther- was a Christian monk from Germany. In 1517, he protested against the Catholic Church, which was in Rome. His supporters were called Protestants.
Elizabeth 1 of England-Elizabeth’s reign is often called the Golden Age because it was a time of discovery and wealth for England in the 16th century.
Leonardo da Vince-Lived in Italy in the 15th century. He was a great painter and sculptor. He was also an architect, and engineer, a scientist, and an inventor.
