The American Civil War

The American Civil War (Mitchell Reid).

Of all the wars that have involved the United States, none have seen them pay a toll as the conflict from 1861 to 1865 was fought between North and South for the abolition of slavery.
Even taking into account that fought the Americans is one side than the other, the 620,000 killed since the civil war are a striking: the photograph of a slaughterhouse.

Blue gray coats and jackets.

Our childhood was nourished with stories about the American Civil War.

No war has been treated with such respect from the movies:

“Persuasion” by William Wyler (1956), “Horse Soldiers” by John Ford (1959), “Shenandoah, the valley of honor” by Andrew McLaglen (1965) are, albeit with different nuances, the sad apologies blood unnecessarily paid, the horror of fratricide on the stupidity of war.

Now Hollywood has churned out a new blockbuster, which revives the memory of that bloody conflict: “Could Return to Mountain” by Anthony Minghella.

The book (available separately from the newspaper, as it has been for all the inserts bulky) is the new edition of the homonymous work published by the Society Editrice Il Mulino – Bologna.
It consists of a substantial preface and six chapters addressing the event in its various respects: that the military organization that the effects on civilian population from the political to the economic.

The volume also contains some papers geo-political, the chronology of events and a substantial bibliography recommended.

How many questions can be answered open a good book of history is well known.
Mitchell’s work, without analysis or originality to shine particularly bright for the exhibition, leads to a number of reflections (and not only closely related to the facts in question), and provides useful information to clarify the framework for effectively events.
I will simply mention a few.

Before going down on the battlefields of the American Civil War was fought on the long benches of Congress.

Many attempts were made to compromise between the two sides but who were politically “cross” states of the north against the southern states apart from belonging to the Democratic Party or the Republican.

The federal government, geo-political aggregation newborn who labored to give himself a state structure, saw all his diplomatic efforts fail to gain recognition from European states.

The war, as often happens, had beneficial effects on economic (GDP growth in the northern states; big boost to industrialization in the South). Even the speculation reached unexpected levels until the manufacture of fabrics for the military so bad that the uniforms are ragged in the rain.

Whatever the noble ideal that motivated the Union, apartheid began in nordiste troops. The 166 African-American regiments were composed of only blacks that soldiers under the command of white officers, they received lower wages and poorer rations.

President Lincoln was by far the most far-sighted politicians of his time, animated by a sincere ideal both as cautious in planning the future of its difficult.

Never in the history of the United States, an event had such political and social relevance. The deliverance from the slavery of millions of men was the first, necessary step in their not yet completed, advanced towards social equality.

After the conflict, and while already begun its predictable consequences, in so great a hatred substitute for compliance.
