The American Revolution questions are answered! Read and learn more about the American Revolution. Your understanding of America will surely increase.
Why did Congress pick George Washington to lead the Revolution if he had never led or been part of a successful military operation?
George Washington, although never part of a successful military operation, was chosen by Congress to lead the Revolution because he was a rich Virginian, had military experience, and was also very tall based on the height standards of that time. George Washington was very wealthy, and also a Virginian. Being very affluent, he could provide clothes, food, and weapons to the military, and since he was a Virginian, he had plenty of connections to other very important people to society who could help out the military. Washington had past military experience. Although he was never in a successful military procedure, he knew how a military worked and the basic strategies and tactics in a war. Unlike most people of that time, George Washington was towered over the ground at six feet and three inches. Not many people could meet his height, and along with George Washingtons other skills; he could literally be someone to be looked up to. Regardless of the aspects of Washington that made him unfit to lead the Revolution, Congress made an astute decision in making him the general in the American Revolution, and eventually, Washington led the Colonies to the victory against England that they had desired so much.
