The Americans Chapter 11 Assessment
The Civil War.
1. Ulysses S. Grant was the general for the Union. He was in command of the Union troops and eventually defeated the Confederacy in the Civil War.
2. Robert E Lee was the general for the Confederacy. He opposed secession but he declined an offer to head the Union army and cast his lot with the state of Virginia.
3. The Emancipation Proclamation it states that slaves will become free in the Confederacy.
4. A conscription is a draft that would force certain members of the population to serve in the army.
5. An income tax, was a tax that takes a specific percentage of the individual’s income. The first income tax was needed in 1863 because Congress needed a way to pay for the war debt.
6. Andersonville, a city in Georgia was home to a Confederate prison. This prison had 33, 000 prisoners in 26 acres of land. Conditions in this prison were very brutal and hard to handle.
7. The Gettysburg Address was Lincoln’s speech given in the city of Gettysburg. This speech united the people and gave new hope to the Union.
8. Appomattox Court House was the scene in which Robert E Lee surrendered to Ulysses S Grant and the Union. This action lead to the end of the Civil War.
9. The Thirteenth Amendment stated that Slavery or involuntary service was not allowed except for the means of punishment and reparation.
10. John Wilkes Booth was the murderer of Abraham Lincoln as Booth shot Lincoln in Ford’s Theater on the night of April 14, 1865.
1. The North’s strategies were the adavtages of enormous amounts of resources and firepower. As the South used dedicated solidiers and knowledge of the battlefield that is being fought on.
2. The North had more resources, more firepower, and a better extensive railroad system.
3. For many people, the Emancipation Proclamation gave the Civil War a higher moral purpose. As for the people who didn’t approve of it, they claimed that it would only extend the war into a longer period of time.
4. In the North during the war many people protested the goods being sold in the North. For example the selling of spoiled meat and told the people that it was fresh. In the South, there were protests about the shortages of food and how the Union was getting the majority of the food for themselves.
5. There were many factors that lead to the deterioration of the South’s morale. One example of this was the Southern farmers started to sell their food to eh Northerners as they needed the money, also many soldiers for the South deserted their camps and switched over to the Union.
6. Both William Sherman and Grant believed in total war. They believed that it was essential to fight not only the South’ s armies but their government.
7. After the Civil War, the National Bank Act was passed, which set up a system of federally chartered banks, set requirements for loans, and provided for the banks to be inspected. These new changes help the US become a economical giant.
1. Abraham Lincoln’s policies supported the government to have more federal power because he believed that the government itself could abolish slavery for where ever it existed. Jefferson Davis supported the government o be less federal because Davis wanted to keep slavery and successfully secede from the Union.
2. Lincoln’s Legacy is the preserver of the Union as he protected it from the Confederacy during the Cival War. Lincoln was one of the main conservers of the United States in history.
