The Battle of Shiloh

The Battle of Shiloh once again witnessed outnumbered Confederate forces take on their Union force counterparts, and get the better of them on the field of battle.

The Battle of Shiloh was fought during the year 1862; it was yet another bloody battle in the American Civil War. The tide of the American Civil War was at that point in time very gradually turning in the favour of the Union forces despite their inability to completely overwhelm their confederate adversaries.

At the Battle of Shiloh the Confederate forces that were commanded by Albert Sidney Johnston who was attempting to prevent the Union forces from taking control of Tennessee. Not only was Johnston indecisive during the battle, he was killed. His replacement Beauregard by poor decision-making allowed the Union forces to capture Memphis.

On the other hand, Ulysses S. Grant and William T Sherman commanded the Union forces at the Battle of Shiloh. The Union forces only gained Memphis due to the tactical errors of the Confederate commanders.

During the course of the Battle of Shiloh there was very heavy fighting as both sides sought an important victory.

The Battle of Shiloh was fought in 1862, with the fighting being dominated by the Union forces. However the result of the Battle of Shiloh was not actually as decisive as the commanders of the Union forces had anticipated it would be.

By the time that the Battle of Shiloh was actually finished, the Confederate forces had lost 10,700 whilst the Union forces had lost 13,050. The Confederate forces could certainly not afford to carry on losing such large quantities of both men and material given their lack of manpower and weapons.
