The Causes of WW I

In this article the start WW1 is carefully described. Although there are many causes for WW1 most of them are not proven or disagreed by historians. So here are the main ones.

The main causes of WWI can be divided into two main groups; the long-term causes and the short-term causes. The long-term causes include major events in history that possibly started quarrels between countries like; French anger at losing Alsace Loraine to Germany, Russia and Austria fighting for attention from SE Europe, Britain and Germany trying to get better naval technology and Germany trying to get better weaponry than France. The causes can be divided into other sub categories.

  • Militarism, the act of building up armies and making weaponry.
  • Alliances, creating alliances and enemies.
  • Imperialism, trying to expand borders and create an empire.
  • Nationalism, having support and loyalty to your country and being a patriot.

The main event that triggered the Great War was the killing of the archduke of Austro Hungary; Franz Ferdinand he was killed 18th June 1914, by an 18 year old Back hand gang member. The Black Hand gang was an illegal Organization started by a group of Serbians who wanted freedom for the Bosnian part of Austro-Hungary.

As much a cause as the actual assassination was Austria’s over-reaction to it. Serbia was willing to co-operate in the trial and punishment of the guilty, but Austria made unacceptable demands that went well beyond justice or even revenge, and seemed positively designed to make war inevitable. Austria must shoulder a great deal of the blame.
