Coffee history.
Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world and it has a long and varied history. The 9th century is the first recorded date when people drank coffee, in Arabia. Extensive planting of coffee first started in Yemen, in the Middle East, in the 15th century and it was forbidden to take coffee plants out of the country. However, plants were smuggled to India and Europe. In the late 16th century priests asked Pope Clement VIII to ban the evil drink of coffee but he refused!
The first coffeehouse in London opened in the 1680s and soon there were coffeehouse all over the city.
They were known as “penny universities” because you could buy a cup of coffee for a penny and learn more at the coffeehouse than in class!
In 1690, the Dutch introduced coffee cultivation to their colonies in Indonesia .Several decades later. Coffee arrived in Latin America when the French brought a coffee plant to the island of Martinique.
When a rare plant disease devastated the coffee plantations in south-east Asia in the mid-19th century, Brazil emerged as the world’s foremost producer, which it still is today. The first espresso machine was made in France in 1822 and instant coffee was first marketed in 1909.
To give you an idea of the popularity of coffee, Starbucks coffee opened in 1071 and today has3,300 locations in ten countries.
Why is coffee drinking so popular?
People believe it has stimulating properties so it helps you concentrate or work.
It also tastes good and everyone has their favorite type of coffee: cappuccino, espresso, iced, mocha, and many other forms to prepare it.
