The Effectiveness of Feudalism
The effectiveness of Feudalism.
Every great nation has to start with something to build off of. The middle ages needed something to keep everything in order. Kings and Queens were given all this land and power, but they couldn’t control it because it was so much. They needed to create something so that they can hand power over to other people without handing over the entire country. They developed an early form of government that they called Feudalism. Feudalism allowed Kings and Queens to hand over pieces of land to different Lords. Lords would be in charge of overseeing this part of land. They would hire Knights to defend the land when necessary and in return the Lords gave a piece of land to the knights. Finally, at the bottom of this system were the peasants who worked on the knight’s land and did farming and agricultural projects. Daniel McGarry once said, “In a time of great insecurity, it provided local defense and government, without entirely sacrificing unity.” Feudalism was definitely an affective form of government because it was organized, provided local defenses, and it taught us useful hints and tips on creating a productive government.
Kings and Queens controlled everything during the middles ages. It soon became to overwhelming for one person to handle so they created a form of government where the King or Queen can hand down power to other people to control certain parts of their country. Today power obtained through money and leadership. But, during the Middles Ages this wasn’t used. Land was considered power during that time. The system that they created was called Feudalism. A king or Queen would give power (land) to Lords. Lords would hire Knights to protect the land. In return they too would receive some land. Finally, Knights would hire peasants to do all the work around the land. They would use the land for farming. The fruits and vegetables would then go to the Lords. This system was very organized because it gave everyone a place in the system. The higher ranked people would be on the top with the most power. The lowest rank people would be on the bottom. These would be peasants would do hard labor such as working on the farm.
Land represented power, thus land was very precious during this time. Invaders would often try and attack and claim the land for their own purposes. This is the reason why Lords would hire knights. When land is endangered of being taken away knights would be called to take on the job of defending their land. Feudalism provided local defense to every one. This is very important because I am sure that peasants or other people living on the land would feel insecure if they were to be attacked without having a chance to defend them selves. In a way there is mutual respect throughout this system. The peasants would work for the knights and receive protection. The knights would defend the land in return for power. The Lords would be able to hold onto the land making the King or Queen happy.
We learned and solved our mistakes through past experiences. Feudalism was the foundation in making future governments better. We learned to avoid important things when making a successful government. Public services were horrendous in these villages. Confusion was also a big problem because no one knew what was going on. Finally, wars were common because everyone wanted land to gain more power. We gained knowledge from learning from these mistakes. Today we don’t need to encounter any of these problems because our government created a place to live where we can be clean and safe. Hopefully, if there are any problems now we can resolve them so that future generations don’t need to suffer.
Feudalism was an excellent way to start off a new government. With no past experiences they did a pretty good job. The helped provide local defense, taught us the basics for manners, it was organized and everyone got something good out of this. Feudalism was good because it was a very good start on building an excellent government. It gave us the basis and taught us things to avoid to making a successful and working government.
