The Female
Seventy years ago, being a woman would mean to be a servant to the husband. This is no longer the case. Today, women are encouraged to go into the work force support the family just as much as the man of the house would. They are no longer confined to the home, pressured to have dinner waiting when the husband comes home. Women, today, are more independent than ever before. Today, being a woman means to impact society just as much as a man; to join the work force and be successful all while taking on the traditional house roles of a woman. Not only are the roles of women debatable, but the customs of women are also debatable. So, what does it mean to be feminine? According to the Oxford English Dictionary, feminine means “characteristic of, peculiar or proper to women; womanlike, womanly.” This definition is very broad, and leaves the reader to decide what is “womanlike” or “womanly.”
Every family is unique, and no single position in the family is the same across the world. People view the role of women differently; just as the North opposed slavery and the South favored it in the Pre-Civil War era. Many people feel that the traditional role of the woman, such as cleaning, cooking, and parenting, is the way to go, but that is quickly changing as time advances.
Half a decade ago, no one could even imagine a female being a CEO of a major corporation. Today, there are numerous females who lead some of the world’s biggest corporations. A notable female CEO is Indra Nooyi of PepsiCo Incorporated. Not only is she CEO of PepsiCo, but is also successful at what she does. In May of 2008, Time Magazine Labeled Indra Nooyi one of the “World’s 100 Most Influential People,” for being a “world class leader” by being a role model for other companies and helping the international business of PepsiCo (Schultz 116-117). This goes to show that as time advances, it becomes more acceptable for women to bring home the bacon, so to speak.
