The First Toilet

An interesting history of the device we take for granted everyday. The toilet is one of the most important and useful devices created by man.

A toilet. For many it is taken as granted, but some people don’t even have toilets. The idea first evolved from the Romans who didn’t like to leave their droppings lying around. Before any idea of the toilet ever surfaced, Romans used to relieve themselves whenever they felt like it. So a person could be walking down a road, and see someone relieving themselves. So what were you supposed to do when you saw someone? Just walk away and pretend they weren’t even there. Now that was proper etiquette.

Soon, many Romans did not like the idea of leaving waste all over the place. Eventually, the king came up with the idea of taking the poop and storing it in pots. Soon, every house had a pot where members of the family go to drop their load. This pot was supposed to be emptied by a “pot boy” every evening. That is the worst job in history, collecting poop. However, there was a fee for poop collecting. Many Romans did not like to pay the fees, so they just dumped their pots wherever they felt like. Now this made it very dangerous to take a moonlight walk.

So those were the first concept of the toilet. This important device has evolved over the centuries, but the concepts are the same. It was Thomas Crapper who invented the worlds first flushing toilet. Anyone notice that last name? Now Thomas was a gifted inventor and he decided that he wanted the poop to go away. Smart man Thomas Crapper was. So that is how the toilet was invented.
