The Genius of China: Printing
Printing is one of our important invention in China. It has been existed a long long ago and affect the whole world. If you want to explore the civilization in China, you should take a look of it.
The Chinese once invented paper then invented printing. Ancient people did not use printer to print out their things instead they use block printing.
People at that time engrave their names on a stone as their signature, and then the Chinese created to fix the block into a board and formed the block printing. It sounds easy for you, but at that time, people don’t have machinery, so it is really time-consuming to engrave a small wooden block. Moreover, it was easy to engrave wrongly, because the Chinese words are engraved inverted!
During the Northern Song Dynasty, the movable printer had been invented. It is reusable too. And so, people were started to use the movable block printer to print certain books and paper. In the 21th century, you may think that it is so clumsy to repeat all the steps, but you should know that this kind of movable-type printing had given great influences all around the world.
In Europe, before the 15th century, all books in Europe were copied by hand. This made production time long and prices high. During the Renaissance, a German named Gutenberg invented the first movable-type printing press. This new method of printing shortened production times and cut the cost of producing books, thus expanding exchanges in learning. All this helped promote the development of the Renaissance.
Below is the procedures of how the movable-type printing press worked:
1. Forming letters with metal castings.
2. Arranging the letters into pages of words. Thirdly, inking and printing the first page onto sheets of paper.
3. Re-arranging the letters into new pages of words. Moreover, printing the second page using the letters again.
4. Repeating the process until all pages was printed.
5. Sewing and covering the pages to make a book.
But in the 21th century, we have machines to help us publishing our works. Scientists and many doctors are started to complete a 3D printer, which can draw the 3 dimension images of every parts of our organs in order to explore more about the body of human beings.
