The Great Depression

Some interesting information on the period.

The main issue of the presidential election of 1932 was the Great Depression.  In his inaugural address of 1833, Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed this issue.  One of the major focuses of the address was unemployment and how to get jobs back.  Another was that land should be used for what it is suited for, instead of wasted. Plus it also talks about supervision over the banks to ensure they don’t run out of money. Roosevelt dealt with these issues during his presidency and helped end the Great Depression.

Roosevelt believed the major concern of the Depression was all of the unemployed people. He wanted to get everyone back into their jobs so he had the government directly recruit people to work for them. I believe this was a good plan. This is because unemployment was a major problem of the time and once people had jobs they could make and spend money.

Franklin D. Roosevelt also talked about distributing land so that the country could get the most use out of it possible. I think this is smart. If we waste land then we are basically wasting money. The land should be used for what it is needed. Also I believe that the people should have spread out from the urban areas. This would create new places for jobs and give people more places to live.

Finally, Roosevelt talked about ensuring that banks had the money they promised people they had.  This seems really important to me. This is because the banks were a main cause of the Great Depression and it was really important to make sure it never happened again.  I think that Roosevelt made a good decision in this preventative step.

In conclusion, Roosevelt discussed the issues of the great depression in his Inaugural address. One focus was unemployment, which he felt was a very bad thing for our country. Another was land distribution, which could maximize the use of our natural resources. Also he talked about how banks needed to be supervised in order to make sure they had the money they promised. Overall Roosevelt had a good and effective plan to ending the depression.
