The Great Depression: Human Suffering Leads to Knowledge

Garraty, John. The Great Depression. New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1986. This book analyzes the Great Depression on a world scale. It is well written and the author brings in politics and social consequences related to the Great Depression. It examines the policies of European Countries and compares them to the New Deal issued by FDR. The book discusses the rise of Hitler and the Nazis and relates it back to the Great Depression. The book also contains comments and opinions by the contemporaries. The author John Garraty is a well-known author and historian and presents the book in a world perspective; not limited to the American view.

Johnson, Paul. The World from the Twenties to the Eighties. New York: Harper & Row, 1983. Paul Johnson is an established author and historian, who has written well over forty works and has recently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The book discusses the changing world from the 1920s to the 1980s. It gives an overwhelming report on the Great Depression. It reflects on the change in policies and economics, which is vital to the Great Depression’s impact on future events and Europe as a whole

Thackeray, Frank W., and John E. Findling. Events that Changed the Twentieth Century. Westport: Greenwood, 1995. This book covers the major events that had a lasting impact on the world during the twentieth century. The Great Depression has an enormous section filled with information and thoughtful insight. Not only does it contain facts, but also the author presents how this event changed the world and America. First the facts and information are given, followed by an interpretive essay that analyses the information.

Although brief, it gives a clear-cut explanation of the impacts the Great Depression had on the entire globe. Published by an establish encyclopedia and written by an associate professor, this article is a great source of information and facts.

It consists of many visual graphs and statistics. A clear summary of the Great Depression is given and the rise of extremist forces is mentioned. It deals with the impact on Europe as well as the impact foreign polices have on the entire globe and world trade. The Modern Poetry Society, a critical and respected group, manages the web page.
