The Holocaust and Its Effect on Democracy, Dictatorship and Tyranny

Final assingment I did for a poli sci class.

I also believe that we are headed in that direction because of the increase on Prime ministerial power. There is a lot more Centralization in the PMO and he is making a lot more decisions on his own rather than consulting with his cabinet members first.

According to the article on mapleleafweb.com, it states that the main reason why Canada is going in this direction is because on the increase in Prime ministerial power. “A important issue concerns the cabinet as a decision making body and the centralization of power at the hands of the prime minister.” Here it is basically saying that the cabinet makes the decisions but the prime minister has more say in it than the cabinet itself. He makes all final decisions.

As the cabinet became for institutionalized and less departmentalized, the Prime Minister became more of a dominant figure in governmental decisions. “The Prime Minister, whether he is alone or he is in consultation with members of the cabinet, he will set the general priorities and direction of the government, and will use his or her executive staff to oversee and coordinate the activities of Cabinet Ministers to ensure that those priorities are being met.” Today, cabinet ministers make most of their decisions with the Prime Minister himself and his executive staffers.

In conclusion to this question, my answers are both yes and no. Canada is centralized in a way and we are sort of headed towards the Federal State that the USA has, but, of course all the power is going to be in the Prime Ministers office, he controls Canada and he knows what is best for us, that may not be a federal state, but if all the power is in his hands, I think it’s better. We elected him there so I guess we have to take the responsibility that comes with our actions. We voted him in there and there is not much we can do to take him out unless he ruins our democratic government so much that everyone in cabinet turns against him and we call another election.

Canada has always been centralized anyway, ever since Trudeau and his last term in office anyway. He became centralized to get things done, like I’ve
stated before. So why is it such a bad thing to have centralism in a democracy? That may not make sense but democracy is based on what the people want, Centralism in the PMO. The prime minister could take what the people want, and take all the power HE has and make those decisions. For example, people in Nova Scotia are all going out west to work because there are no jobs in Nova Scotia because the fishing industry isn’t as good as it used to be and such. Stephen Harper has the power to open up more districts for lobster fishermen, he has the power to close the lobster season for a few ye
