The Importance of Canadian Women in the First World War
The changes in the role of women in Canada during World War one.
Women living in Canada made a huge impact and that made Canada achieve so much during the war. When the men went to war as soldiers, women had to take the role of men in everyday life. They started to work in factories, created groups and joined groups such as the red cross. Without women, Canada would not have been able to make it through the world war. Women started taking up jobs that men would normally do, and if they hadn’t done this, there would be a lot of jobs open and that would make Canada’s economy drop. This would lead to Canada not being finacially stable to support the war.
Even though women could not join the war, they started doing jobs that would help the war. They became nurses and took care of wounded soldiers, they started groups of women that wanted to fight in the war, and they also started to protest for peace and to end the war.
Many of these women were mothers and wives of these soldiers, so they wanted to help out in whatever way they could. When wives and women related to soldiers got to vote, it was a huge step towards the women’s right movement. This was the first time that women had the right to choose their leader and decide what was right for the country. It gave the women of Canada confidence to protest against their rights. They also started to go in many other professions such as the Medical Industry and Education Sector.
The remarkable thing for the Women of Canada was when the women’s right movement came into affect. This was the first time that women were considered as equal and not under men. They were allowed to do anything they want without having a male figure to tell them what to do. Then more and more women started finishing college and university. Today, they can go in any profession they want, and are treated equally in gender to male and can get a decent education.
World War One changed the way women were potrayed at first. They were less than men, being ordered to something by a male, didn’t get a good education, and very little of them had jobs. They changed and got the right to vote, the right to be free and they could do anything they wanted, they could get an education and a job.
It showed that women are just as capable of doing a job that men can do. They were given the responsiblity to run the household, when soldiers were gone to war and they had to farm with the help of other women. The status of women has drastically changed throughout the 20th century.
